Canady: “It’s time for Black women to change the narrative.”
KANSAS CITY, MO – Earlier today, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden announced California Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate for the 2020 presidential election. Senator Harris is the first Black and South Asian American woman to run on a major political party’s presidential ticket.
As the second Black woman elected to serve in the U.S. Senate, Harris is no stranger to making history. Missouri Lt. Governor candidate Alissia Canady is looking forward to watching her do it again this November.
Similar to Harris, Canady is also attempting to make history as the first Black elected official to statewide office in Missouri. And as Harris seeks to bring her expertise as the former Attorney General of California to the White House, Canady — a former Jackson County Assistant Prosecutor — pledges to bring justice to Jefferson City.
“Harris has what it takes to implement change from the top down,” said Missouri Lt. Governor candidate Alissia Canady. “And as I’ve said before: it’s time for Black women to change the narrative about what it takes to be a successful candidate. Joe Biden is right that Senator Harris is a ‘fearless fighter’ — and today our coalition for positive change is that much stronger. I look forward to supporting Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and all the Democratic candidates down the ticket this November.”
In a recent feature in Essence Magazine, Canady called for culturally competent leadership. As a prominent advocate of racial-justice legislation, Canady thinks Harris has what it takes to carry the momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement into Washington.
Throughout her campaign, Canady has earned endorsements from Emily’s List, Missouri Black Political Forum (Black PAC), Missouri State Women’s Political Caucus (MOWPC), Democratic Lt. Governor Association (DLGA) and the Collective PAC. Determined to make her vision for Missouri a reality, Canady will continue to garner support up and down the ballot and across party lines to deliver a decisive victory in November.
